Popcorn
Eating Festival

Orville Redenbacher Look –Alike Contest is
Nationally Known
This contest has grown over the last eight years that the
Festival has been in existence and it has been
supported by one of our foundation sponsor Moore Funeral Home
and Cremation Services and the
Popcorn Festival since 2003. The Festival does boast that it is
the world’s only Orville Redenbacher
Look-Alike Contest and so far, it’s held up to its claim. The
contest does offer nice money prizes to male
or female children or adults. The Festival does not allow past
winners to participate since each year,
the number of contestants increase each year so the Festival’s
board wants to assure everyone gets a
fair chance of winning. Categories include: 5 to 8 years old
($50); 9 to 12 years old ($50); 13-17 years
old ($50), and adults, 18 and up ($500). The contest is a great
way for any organization to make $500
cash by entering someone who looks like Orville.
As always, we are honored to have Ms. Gail Redenbacher Tuminello
and other Redenbacher family
members come and judge the winners for each division. Each year,
they look forward to coming to this
event as judges and no one is better to judge the contestants
than those who knew him the most--the
Redenbacher family.
Our Look-Alike received national acclaim in a book “Eat This!
1001 Things to Do Before You Diet”
by Ian Jackman. It listed States and eating places that that the
author has visited or was
recommended to him. The article does list Redenbacher Popcorn
Festival and it was the only
Festival in Indiana listed. “We were ecstatic to hear about this
news and at first we weren’t sure
if this was true” as stated by Glen and Evelyn Brown. We are not
sure who recommended us or
if the author, Ian Jackman, actually visited our Festival and
partook of the wonderful foods we
offer. But what got the Festival’s attention is the quote from
his book (pg 346) about the Look-
Alike Contest as follows:
"For a twist, the Popcorn Festival of Clay County has been held
since 2003, […] through [the]
first weekend of October at Forest Park, in Brazil, Indiana. The
Festival has its own Oktoberfest
and also celebrates the life of local popcorn entrepreneur
Orville Redenbacher (1907-1995)
with what is billed as the world's only Orville Redenbacher
look-alike contest."
Attempt to locate the author has been made and at this time, we
have not had any response
back but the Festival will continue to contact him and hopefully
he will be able to tell us how
he heard about us or if he actually stopped here to eat at our
Festival. We still have one of the
best Festivals around and it honors our native son, Orville
Clarence Redenbacher whose name
is synonymous to gourmet popping corn. |
