Popcorn Trivia

"Popcorn", the background music for our website is a famous early synthesizer-pop intrumental. Composer Gershon Kingsley of Perry and Kingsley first recorded synthesized music in their 1969 album Music To Moog By. The first synthesizer was developed by Dr. Robert Moog (rhymes with vogue). “Popcorn” was first recorded under the instrumental of "Hot Butter” in 1971. The record (pre-cursor to tapes and CD), was one of a rash of Moog-synthesizer-based releases that characterised the Synth-Pop” craze of the 1960s and 1970s. It has been then covered by various artists, including Jean-Michel Jarre (as the Popcorn Orshestra) and Arthur Fiedler of the Boston Pops Orchestra. There are in fact 500 cover versions and remixes of the song that exist today.  Part of the song's fame comes from the rumor that the characteristic main melody was in fact written by a computer program that was created to compose music. While the statement seemed credible around the time of the computer's relation with music and being rather obscure, it is now assumed that the whole song was created and arranged by Gershon Kingsley.

How old is popcorn?  The first popcorn in North America goes as far back as 80,000 years when Indians cultivated species of native grass with corn.  Archeologists have found two-inch ears of popcorn, 5,600 years old, in New Mexico bat caves. A-maize-ingly, these kernels still popped!

Popcorn is a nutritious snack option.  It’s 77% carbohydrates, 12% protein, 5% fat, and 2% minerals.  The American Dental Association recommends it due to no sugar and it cleanses the teeth.  It’s high in fiber.  Redenbacher’s Gourmet Popping Corn contains 80 calories per 3 cup serving if prepared as directed.

Quadaquina, brother of Chieftain Massasoit of the Wamponoag tribe gave a deerskin bag of popcorn and recipe for popcorn soup as a offering of friendship with the colonists.  The colonists returned with their recipe for a breakfast cereal: popcorn sweetened with sugar and cream which became more acceptable during the Victorian era (1890s).

The meaning of corn today is different.  The generic term corn in the Old World applied to any crop grain of an area.  If you grew wheat, then your corn would be wheat.  If you grew barley, then your corn would be barley.  This applied to oats, millet, and rye too.  So, the American Indians' corn was actually maize to designate their native plant.   Eventually, the term corn became synonymous with maize.
